Sensei Elroy Goliath receiving the 4th Dan certificate from the hand of the highest authority recently (Milan, Italy).
Sensei Elroy Goliath was honoured recently by receiving the Yondan (4th Dan) certificate directly from the hand of Hayato Osawa Shihan (7th Dan) during his seminar in Milan, Italy (4-5 Feb 2012). Osawa Shihan is responsible for upholding the integrity of aikido at Hombu dojo and personally responsible for directly assisting the current Doshu (and previous) in the execution of his tasks. This ceremony follows his successful international 4th Dan examination with Fujimoto Shihan in Europe during July 2011 (read more about Sensei Elroy Goliath 's 4th Dan examination in Europe).
It was the wish of Yoji Fujimoto Shihan (8th Dan) that his student Elroy Goliath’s certificate from Hombu dojo be handed down in this significant way, not only signifying the uniqueness of the first South African passing the international examinations with Fujimoto Shihan in Europe but also emphasizing the acknowledgement of and support for AIKIDO SOUTH AFRICA® by Hombu Dojo for its future role in expanding aikido in South Africa beyond its poor existence today.
“Receiving the Yondan certificate from Osawa Shihan was a big honour and humbling experience for me. I understand that this honour was the wish of my teacher Yoji Fujimoto Shihan and that it carries with it the obligation to continue under his name and that of Hombu Dojo his legacy, expanding South African aikido to a level and quality unknown in South Africa. Although not true of all students, I have seen so many times and it saddens me how aikido in South Africa has only become a means of pursuing the student’s next grade – many times with questionable standards of the requirements and those who award them. This level of complacency and laissez-faire approach does not hold in AIKIDO SOUTH AFRICA® and attaining a grade for its students is secondary to mastering the technical understanding for such grade.
This was one the fundamental reasons why I left another aikido organisation which was started decades ago in South Africa (I was a member and vice-president of that organisation at the time) to establish AIKIDO SOUTH AFRICA® in 2009.
Quality and in-depth teaching and studying the requirements of the technical content, and teaching methodology of one of the world’s leading aikido teachers (Shihan Yoji Fujimoto, Technical Director of ASA), form the foundation of what students are exposed to in AIKIDO SOUTH AFRICA®. Thank you Fujimoto Sensei!”
