ASA students speak about aikido
![]() | I recently overheard an acclaimed MMA fighter make the observation that in the West, the philosophy behind fighting is imposing ones will onto another through taking physical action. On the other hand, he observed that in the East the point of departure is one where the practitioner would argue “well, he has already placed himself off balance, I’ll just help him along!” To me this describes beautifully what I have experienced in Aikido. There is no confrontation, only blending and defusing. I have never experienced any animosity nor confrontation in any class attended, and I feel totally comfortable to say that I don’t expect to experience anything of the sort in the future either. To me Aikido has opened the door to great new friendships, unsurpassed personal and physical growth, as well as and effective means to defend myself should it ever be necessary.![]() Date of Posting: 07 March 2012 Posted By: Francois Burger 3rd Kyu student under Sensei Elroy Goliath, Paarl, Paarl |

![]() | I first heard about Aikido from my mother who joined her work friends in a demonstration. She soon gave up but I enjoyed the classes so much that I just had to carry on. I've been doing it for a year now and I don't regret a single moment. I love the bonds that develop between all the students and sensei Elroy. Thank you for giving people this wonderful opportunity. Love you guys!!!![]() Date of Posting: 13 September 2011 Posted By: Shari Wilkins Paarl |
![]() | I was curious about Aikido but with no Aikido dojo in my surrounding area I visited Aikido South Africa's website. I made contact with Sensei Elroy Goliath and he introduced me to fellow student Peter Lethina, who did not hesitate to take me along to class. I enjoyed my first class very much and since then I am still with sensei. Sensei said that it is not the teacher that chooses the student but the student that chooses the teacher. I am very happy that we as his students choose to experience the world class Aikido lessons and we are privilege to receive it from him, 4th Dan Sensei. Everyone practice Aikido for their own reasons and I belief sensei cater for all our reasons, including but not limited to fitness, self defense, personal development, anger management etc. Thank you Sensei, you inspire us and hopefully we will grow as your students to one day share your knowledge, ethics, professionalism and principles to our students. ![]() Date of Posting: 12 September 2011 Posted By: David Andrews 3rd Kyu student under Sensei Elroy Goliath, Kraaifontein, Western Cape |

![]() | I started Aikido about a month and a half ago and am enjoying it very much. I've always been looking for something to do, but past life were a bit rough and I were on the wrong path. I finally decided to go see and try Aikido, and I loved every moment of it. Its helping with my anger and depression and also my fire dancing. I just want to thank Sensei Sam Olivier for taking me in and Sensei Elroy Goliath for all the support and for the seminar he recently had. Thanks to Sensei Johan Greyling for hosting the seminar, and I'm hoping to see me still doing Aikido 10 years from now.![]() Date of Posting: 05 September 2011 Posted By: Daniel Midrand |

![]() | Sensei Elroy invited me to his dojo for Aikido practice in Feb 1999 during a very difficult time of life. I am grateful I accepted the invitation.Currently, I am practicing Aikido for 12 years under the leadership and guidance of Sensei Elroy. During this time, I think we as students of Paarl School of Aikido had the privilege of witnessing the growth of Aikido in our dojo as well as membership. Myself and Robin Bailey accompanied Sensei Elroy in July 2009 for the annual seminar in Laces (Yes, we survived). My experience on the tatami at that time was that our level of Aikido was on par with the rest of the world. Those ten days of practice and teaching received, directly from Fujimoto Shihan, was an experience that will live with me for many years, because what I’ve learned became part of me and the way I practice Aikido. Thanks to Sensei Elroy’s dedication to Aikido, he ensures that the standard of Aikido in South Africa is that of Fujimoto Shihan’s teaching. ![]() Date of Posting: 19 August 2011 Posted By: Neville D. ![]() | My journey in Aikido started on the 11th of August 2010. My son, at that time 8 years of age, had been hounding me for some time to do karate. I investigated some of the more commonly known arts but never felt comfortable with any of them matching his personality or temperament. After reading a newspaper article on Sensei Goliath and his relationship with Shihan Yoji Fujimoto, I decided to attend one of the classes. On Saturday the 9th of August 2010 my son attended his first class and I signed up the very next Monday. We have not looked back since. I am in constant awe of Sensei Goliath’s ability to work with the children in a calm and patient way every time I watch him teach. He has this amazing ability to attend to each one at his own individual pace, and truly care a great deal for all of them. The senior classes are constantly exposed to the best teachings on offer in South Africa at the moment, with frequent visits from international leaders in the art to supplement our growth even further. Sensei, from both myself and Evan, we would like to thank you for your professionalism, your kindness, your uncompromising passion, your true friendship and not least of all, your brutal Nikyo demonstrations. We look forward to many years of joy and growth in Aikido with you at our side.![]() Date of Posting: 17 August 2011 Posted By: Francois Burger 4th Kyu student under Sensei Elroy Goliath, Paarl |

To find an aikido dojo in South Africa is hard but for the past 6 years I have been fortunate to do aikido under Sensei Goliath. The best part is that am able to learn aikido from the best I have seen and based on seminars here and abroad we are on par with the rest of the world.Excellent work Sensei! ![]() Date of Posting: 16 August 2011 Posted By: Robin Bailey 1st Kyu student of Sensei Goliath, Paarl |
